Environmental Council of Zambia

The Environmental Council of Zambia (ECZ) is a Statutory Body created under an Act of Parliament 'the Environmental Protection and Pollution Control Act of 1990', Cap 204 of the Laws Zambia. The ECZ established in 1992 is mandated to protect Zambia's environment and control pollution levels so as to provide for the health and welfare of persons and the evironment.

The mission of the council is "to regulate and coordinate environmental management, promote awareness and ensure environmental protection through enforcement of regulations and the prevention and control of pollution in support of sustainable development so as to provide for the health and welfare of persons, aminals, plants and the environment of Zambia.

The ECZ is an automous body charged with the responsibility to reguate the management of the environment. Its operate are largely influenced by the economic, political, technological and social situation in the Country.

The core functions of the ECZ include:

  • Draw up and enforce regulation related to water, air and noise pollution, pesticides and toxic substances, waste management and natural resources management;
  • Advise the Government on the formulation of policies related to good management of natural resources and environment;
  • Advise on all matters relating to environmental conservation, protection and pollution control, including necessary policies, research investigations and training
  • Conduct studies and make recommendations on standards related to improvement and maintenance of sound ecological systems.
  • Identify projects, plans and policies that need environmental impact assessment.
  • Monitor trends in the use of natural resources and their impact on the environment.
  • Request information on the quality, quantity and management methods of natural resources and environmental conditions in Zambia.
